Product codes and Barcoding
This may seem like a boring topic, but having clear product codes and correct barcodes can save you a lot of time in the long run.
Here’s our short guide to adding product codes and barcodes to your products for wholesale.
Product Codes
Each product should have it’s own individual product code.
This is a code (or number) also known as an ‘SKU’ or ‘UPC.’ You can make this code up yourself, usually it could relate to the collection name or your company name.
For example;
Product Name: ‘Tits Up Jumper’
Product Code: TU001
If this product has a multiple sizes or colours, these should all have their own unique product code; TU001, TU002. TU003 etc.
Barcodes
Each product should also have it’s own individual barcode.
To set up your products with barcodes, you will need to register on the GS1 website.
GS1 is the only authorised provider of Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs) – the number you see under the barcode (also known as an EAN or UPC) that’s unique to that product.
Find the GS1 site here.
Membership for GS1 costs around £100 per year, for up to 1000 barcode numbers.
Once you have registered with GS1, you will need to head straight to your number bank and choose the GTIN-13 Number type.
Here you can add your product details and start creating your barcode numbers.
You can now use the barcode number to create your barcode image for your product. GS1 will give you a few free barcodes, but we recommend once you have created your number to input it on Terry Burton’s website to create a free barcode image.
You can access the Terry Burton website here.
